Job Type
Protean Pictures Ltd. is hiring a Sound Mixer for a single-day interview shoot on October 13, 2026, in Asheville, NC. The Sound Mixer works within the production sound department, responsible for capturing clean, broadcast-ready dialogue and ambient audio directly to the recording medium on set. This role suits a location sound professional with hands-on experience running a bag or cart rig on documentary or interview format productions.
About the Role
This is a day-player engagement on a single-camera interview production for Protean Pictures Ltd., operating in a run-and-gun or controlled interview setup depending on the location. The Sound Mixer will be the sole audio department lead on set, working directly with the director and DP to place talent, manage room tone, and deliver isolated tracks ready for post-production workflow. Expect a focused shoot day built around one or more sit-down interview setups with natural or controlled lighting conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Prep, transport, and deploy all audio equipment including boom, lavalier, and mixer rig ahead of the shoot call time.
- Place and conceal wireless lavalier microphones on interview subjects, accounting for clothing noise and RF interference in the location environment.
- Monitor live audio levels throughout the shoot and flag any technical issues to the director before they reach post.
- Record clean, separated tracks per ISO channel to ensure the post-production sound team has full flexibility in the edit.
- Capture room tone and any additional location audio required for the editorial and sound design process.
- Coordinate with the camera department on timecode sync to maintain alignment across all recorded media.
What You Bring
- Proven credits on documentary, interview format, or non-fiction video production as a production sound mixer or location sound recordist.
- Proficiency with professional field recorders such as the Sound Devices 833 or equivalent, and a working knowledge of wireless systems from Lectrosonics, Zaxcom, or Sennheiser.
- Ownership of or reliable access to a full location sound kit appropriate for a single-day interview shoot.
- Ability to work independently as the sole audio department representative on a small production crew.
Why This Role
Protean Pictures Ltd. works across non-fiction and interview-driven formats, bringing a focused and professional approach to single-day and short-form production. This engagement offers a clear, well-defined shoot day with a company that respects department heads and their workflow. The project date is confirmed for October 13, 2026, in Asheville, NC.
