Mikros Animation is collecting expressions of interest for a Senior Groom Artist (Blender) based in Montreal, Canada. This role sits within the character department and is responsible for producing hair descriptions for 3D animated characters, animals, and props, working to both the artistic direction and the technical pipeline of the production. It suits a groom artist with feature animation credits who is comfortable bridging the gap between artistic vision and pipeline compliance.

About the Role

The Senior Groom Artist (Blender) works under the Groom Lead or Supervisor and the Character Supervisor, contributing to asset builds that feed directly into the animation pipeline. This is not a currently active position, but Mikros Animation anticipates opening roles in the coming weeks and is building a shortlist ahead of time. Day to day, the work involves grooming and shading character assets in Blender, collaborating closely with modeling, rigging, and surfacing teams to keep assets technically compliant across each department’s requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and groom hair systems for characters, creatures, and props using Blender, referencing concept art and model sheets provided by the art department.
  • Shade hair assets as required by the production, ensuring consistency with the established look development for the project.
  • Deliver assets that are fully compliant with the internal VFX pipeline and production workflow at each stage of the process.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of groom tools used within the department.
  • Execute supervisor and director notes accurately and within the timing and quotas set by the production coordinator.
  • Prepare and present approval elements in an organized way, communicating proactively with the wider character and surfacing teams.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrated experience as a groom artist in feature film production or high-end animation studio work.
  • Strong proficiency in Blender, specifically for hair grooming and simulation workflows.
  • Familiarity with how groom assets interact with rigging, modeling, and surfacing within a structured animation pipeline.
  • Experience shading hair assets and understanding the downstream impact on lighting and rendering.
  • Ability to manage your own workload across multiple assets and meet production deadlines consistently.
