About the Role
This position sits within the KCBS/KCAL news production team, supporting reporters and producers across scheduled assignments and breaking news. Day-to-day work involves going out in the field with journalists, managing your own gear, and delivering edited packages that meet broadcast standards. The role requires someone who can own the full production chain from shot acquisition through to final delivery on deadline.
Key Responsibilities
- Shoot compelling, broadcast-ready visual content as a one-person ENG crew or as part of a larger production team, depending on assignment scope.
- Direct lighting and establish the overall visual look for field shoots, ensuring all picture and audio elements meet KCBS/KCAL broadcast specifications.
- Respond to breaking news stories, adapting quickly to unpredictable conditions and shifting logistics in the field.
- Operate and maintain ENG vehicles, coordinating with relevant departments to keep all cameras, audio gear, and support equipment in working order.
- Collaborate closely with on-air talent and producers to meet shot requirements and support logistical needs across live and recorded news segments.
- Contribute to original reporting and enterprise stories by bringing a strong visual storytelling sensibility to every assignment.
What You Bring
- A minimum of 3 years of ENG photography experience in a large television news market.
- Proficiency in field shooting, lighting, and non-linear editing for broadcast news delivery.
- Solid working knowledge of current and evolving newsgathering technologies used in local television production.
- Experience with special event coverage, logistics planning, and execution in a news environment.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to give and receive constructive feedback while working under deadline pressure.
