Disney’s visual effects division ILM is hiring a Motion Editing Supervisor at its London studio, Lacon House. This role sits at the centre of the motion capture pipeline, overseeing the processing, cleaning, and retargeting of raw mocap data onto complex 3D character rigs for feature film VFX production. It suits an experienced technical artist who can operate equally well in a supervisory capacity and in the weeds of a live VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Motion Editing department at ILM London acts as the critical bridge between the motion capture stage and final character animation, translating human performance data onto creature and character rigs that bear little physical resemblance to the original actor. On any given day, the Motion Editing Supervisor is reviewing shot work, coordinating with Animation and Mocap teams, managing cross-site operations across ILM’s global studios, and ensuring the pipeline holds together under production pressure. This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of two days on-site per week at Lacon House.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct a team of motion editors processing high-density raw capture data, assigning shots in coordination with production to meet department deadlines.
• Oversee the retargeting process, including mapping human joint movement onto differently proportioned digital skeletons while preserving realistic physics, weight, and momentum.
• Serve as the creative guardian of the actor’s performance, ensuring emotional nuance and physical intention survive the translation onto CGI characters.
• Review shots before handoff to Animation and other departments, catching technical errors including foot sliding, geometry intersection, and jittery joint pops.
• Collaborate directly with Animation Supervisors, Virtual Production Supervisors, and VFX Supervisors to ensure motion data serves the director’s intent across the post-production workflow.
• Lead department setup and standardisation across multiple global studio sites, developing training programs and mentoring cross-site teams to maintain consistent output quality.

What You Bring

• Proven credits in high-end feature film VFX or episodic television at a supervisory or senior motion editing level, supported by a current showreel or shot breakdown.
• Hands-on experience with Maya and MotionBuilder as core motion editing tools, with Blender or Nuance also valued.
• Solid understanding of retargeting and blending techniques applied to mocap animation pipelines.
• Sharp eye for motion timing, posture, and the physical logic that separates convincing creature performance from mechanical movement.
• Experience managing and mentoring artists within a structured VFX pipeline environment.
• Background in Linux is a plus, and familiarity with Vicon Shogun Post is an added advantage.
