Mikros Animation is hiring for multiple FX Artist positions, at both mid and senior levels, based in Montreal, Canada. This role sits within the 3D pipeline and is responsible for producing simulation-based effects including fire, smoke, fluid dynamics, destruction, and abstract elements that reach final composite in feature animation and VFX production. It suits an artist who is equally comfortable owning a shot from initial setup through cache delivery and working closely with CG supervision to hit both the artistic brief and the technical spec.

About the Role

The FX department at Mikros Animation operates at the center of the 3D pipeline, with this artist interfacing daily with lighting, layout, compositing, and the pipeline team to keep effects technically compatible across departments. On any given day, the work moves between building and refining Houdini simulations, attending dailies, integrating supervisor notes, and managing cache optimization across multiple assigned shots. The studio works across feature animation projects, and the FX team is expected to carry real creative weight, not just execute setups handed down from above.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce complex Houdini simulations across Pyro, Flip, RBD, and Vellum solvers, delivering effects that meet the visual and narrative intent of each shot.
• Maintain full ownership of assigned FX tasks from initial rig through final cache submission, ensuring workfiles are clean and technically compliant before handoff.
• Identify simulation and setup issues early and deliver functional solutions without waiting for direction from leads.
• Check effect compatibility with layout, lighting, and compositing departments to avoid downstream technical problems in the VFX pipeline.
• Contribute to dailies with prepared work, absorb feedback constructively, and turn around revisions on schedule.
• Document workflows and share tools or techniques with other FX artists to raise the overall output of the department.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated mid or senior level experience as an FX Artist on feature animation or VFX production.
• Strong working knowledge of Houdini, specifically Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs.
• A reel showing photorealistic simulations including fire, smoke, destruction, fluids, and at least one abstract or stylized effect type.
• Ability to estimate task durations accurately and communicate risks to production without prompting.
• Experience working within a structured 3D animation studio pipeline with formal cache and file naming conventions.
