Project Type: Documentary
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Whisper is hiring a Trainee Camera Operator through its Whisper Academy programme, based in Cardiff, Wales. This role sits within the camera department at Whisper Cymru, where the focus is live sports television production and documentary work across Welsh and UK broadcasters. It suits someone early in their career who wants structured, on-the-ground training in broadcast camera operation rather than self-directed freelancing.

About the Role

The Trainee Camera Operator works embedded within the Whisper Cymru production team, contributing to live broadcast television coverage and digital content across a slate that includes rugby, motorsport, and documentary formats. Day to day, that means being on set and on location alongside experienced operators, learning to frame and capture shots to brief while also handling kit management and equipment bookings. This is a 12-month contract starting August 2026, structured as a full trainee pathway rather than a straight junior hire.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operating cameras and auxiliary equipment on live sports broadcasts and documentary productions for broadcasters including S4C, BBC, and Channel 4.
  • Framing and capturing shots in line with the director’s vision across a range of broadcast television formats.
  • Supporting kit management, including the booking, preparation, and return of camera equipment between productions.
  • Adapting to live production environments where schedules shift and technical challenges require fast, calm decision-making.
  • Contributing to digital content shoots for clients including the British and Irish Lions and the Welsh Rugby Union.
  • Working a five-day week with flexibility for weekend production days, with lieu days given in return.

What You Bring

  • A clear intention to build a career specifically as a camera operator in broadcast or live television production.
  • Working knowledge of camera systems used in broadcast environments, with a willingness to develop that further on the job.
  • Basic understanding of sound and lighting as they relate to camera department workflow.
  • Competency across Microsoft Office and Outlook for production administration and kit scheduling.
  • A genuine interest in sport across multiple disciplines, given the production slate is heavily sports-led.

Why This Role

Whisper Cymru works on returning broadcast commissions across Welsh and UK television, which means a trainee here gets consistent production experience rather than one-off jobs. The salary is set at National Living Wage, and the structured academy format means training is built into the role rather than expected to happen in your own time. The application deadline is Monday 13th July.
