Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Firaxis Games is hiring a Senior VFX Artist to join their studio in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. This role sits within the visual effects department, where the artist is responsible for building real-time particle systems, Unreal Engine 5 materials, and memory-efficient texture assets that serve the game’s visual and gameplay goals across multiple platforms. It suits a VFX pipeline veteran with shipped console titles who is comfortable working directly with art directors and technical leads to define production standards.

About the Role

The Senior VFX Artist works across all active titles at Firaxis Games, collaborating daily with the Visual Effects Director, Art Directors, and designers to ensure effects read correctly on both Xbox and PlayStation hardware. The day-to-day sits at the intersection of real-time VFX workflow and technical art, balancing visual quality against fixed console performance budgets. This is a production-facing position with direct input into how VFX processes are built and maintained across the studio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on real-time particle systems using Unreal Engine 5’s Niagara toolset to support gameplay readability and art direction targets.
  • Author materials for particle systems and world geometry within the UE5 shader pipeline, ensuring they meet project framerate objectives.
  • Produce memory-efficient texture assets using Adobe Photoshop, Substance Designer, Houdini, or Embergen depending on the asset’s requirements.
  • Create base 3D geometry, UV layouts, and simple animations to support VFX elements when no dedicated modeling resource is available.
  • Attend VFX implementation reviews and contribute technical solutions that communicate gameplay concepts while staying within console hardware constraints.
  • Work alongside the Technical Art Director and Lead Artist to document and establish production pipelines that account for the game’s specific technical limitations.

What You Bring

  • Six or more years of experience as a VFX Artist within the game industry, with at least two shipped multiplatform titles in your credits.
  • Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine and Houdini as part of a professional VFX pipeline.
  • Proficiency in 3DS Max or Maya, Substance Designer, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Demonstrated understanding of console hardware limitations, fixed technical specifications, and their impact on real-time VFX performance.
  • Proven ability to solve complex technical and visual problems within a multidisciplinary game development environment.

Why This Role

Firaxis Games in Montréal is part of a studio group with a track record on major franchise titles, giving this Senior VFX Artist direct exposure to large-scale multiplatform production at a studio with established pipelines and leadership. The role carries real influence over how VFX processes are shaped, not just executed. For an artist looking to deepen their real-time VFX workflow experience on high-profile titles, this is a substantive position with scope to grow.

Apply now for the Senior VFX Artist role at Firaxis Games and bring your real-time VFX experience to a studio with serious production ambitions.
