BBC is hiring a Head of Multimedia and Social for its commercial news operation based in New York, NY. This role leads the editorial and production strategy for digital video and social content distributed across BBC.com, the international BBC app, and connected platforms. It suits a senior digital journalist or content strategist who has run multidisciplinary teams and has a real track record in shortform video production and social distribution.
About the Role
Sitting within BBC Commercial News and reporting to senior leadership, this position owns the full digital video pipeline from commissioning through publication, working alongside stakeholders across BBC Studios and BBC News. Day to day, that means overseeing shortform video production across editorial verticals including health, business, culture, travel, and technology, while also steering longer-lead feature projects. The role carries both editorial and operational weight, covering team management, workflow development, and platform strategy at the same time.
Key Responsibilities
- Set the editorial and strategic direction for all multimedia and social output across BBC.com and its associated apps, ensuring content serves global audiences and meets BBC editorial standards.
- Manage and develop a multidisciplinary team of journalists and content producers, building a production culture that prizes rigorous journalism and creative accountability.
- Oversee the digital video production workflow end to end, including filming, editing, digital asset management, and final distribution across existing and emerging social platforms.
- Drive creative planning and idea generation for social media campaigns, working directly with partners across BBC Studios on both daily output and longer-term editorial projects.
- Identify and integrate new production tools that improve output quality and streamline the multimedia workflow.
- Adapt format and distribution strategy for specific platform audiences, applying knowledge of social algorithms and content discovery to grow reach and performance metrics.
What You Bring
- Significant leadership experience running editorial teams in digital video, multimedia production, or social content at a major publisher or broadcaster.
- A demonstrated record of producing high-performing shortform video and social campaigns with measurable audience outcomes.
- Technical fluency across multimedia production workflows, including filming, editing, and digital asset management.
- Strong editorial judgement across multiple subject areas, with an understanding of what works for international audiences.
- Experience working across large, matrixed organizations to deliver both daily content and longer-term factual projects.
- Working knowledge of audience development, platform algorithms, and commercial editorial partnerships.
