The University of Salford is hiring a Lecturer in Costume Design based in Salford, England. This role sits within the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology, where you will design and deliver teaching across costume-focused modules while supervising student work that feeds directly into theatre, television, and live events production contexts. It suits an experienced costume professional who has worked across film or television production, theatre, or festivals and is ready to bring that practice into an academic setting.
About the Role
The programme has established placement partnerships with BBC, ITV, and major theatres across the North West, giving students a direct pipeline into professional costume departments. As Lecturer in Costume Design, your day-to-day will involve curriculum delivery, one-to-one student supervision, and contributing to a team that values practice-led teaching grounded in real production workflows. The School is investing in its staff and facilities with a clear goal of becoming a leading provider of practice-based creative education.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver teaching materials across costume design modules, covering areas such as costume construction, period research, and production budgeting for theatre and screen.
- Supervise student projects from concept through to final output, including placement coordination with regional film, television, and events organisations.
- Assess student work at module level, applying marking criteria that reflect current industry standards in costume for television and theatre production.
- Identify gaps or weaknesses in existing curriculum provision and propose revisions that reflect developments in the costume design field.
- Undertake individual or collaborative research relevant to costume practice, contributing to the School’s research profile.
- Provide academic and pastoral support to students throughout their programme, helping them build the professional skills needed to enter the costume industry.
What You Bring
- Hands-on professional experience as a costume designer or supervisor across film, television production, theatre, or large-scale public events.
- A track record of credits in costume for episodic television, theatre, or live performance that you can bring into the classroom as context.
- Experience teaching, mentoring, or training others in a formal or informal capacity within the creative industries.
- The technical knowledge to supervise student work through the full costume production process, from design development to finished garment.
- A degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant discipline, with postgraduate study an advantage.
Why This Role
The University of Salford’s MediaCity campus places you at the centre of one of the UK’s most active media and television production hubs, with direct proximity to major broadcasters and production companies. The role comes with a competitive salary, an excellent pension scheme, 32 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, and flexible working arrangements.
