Job Position(s): Video Editor Remote · Project-based · 3–5 hours/project
Project Type: Documentary
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Healthful Stories, a Seattle-based nonprofit documentary production company, is hiring a Video Editor on a project-by-project basis. This role sits in post-production, where the editor shapes raw interview footage into finished short-form clips, documentary-style segments, and advocacy excerpts that center the patient voice with precision and restraint. It suits an early-career editor with a feel for documentary post-production workflow who wants substantive credits and real editorial responsibility from the start.

About the Role

Healthful Stories produces in-depth interview content with people living with chronic and complex health conditions, and the post-production pipeline is where that material becomes something usable by research, advocacy, and social media audiences. Each project runs approximately three to five hours of editorial work, making this a realistic fit alongside other freelance or student commitments. The editor works from a brief, manages their own timeline, and delivers polished cuts without requiring heavy rounds of revision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cut raw interview footage into structured, documentary-style segments that preserve the integrity of the subject’s account without sensationalizing the material.
  • Produce short-form social media edits derived from longer interview content, adapting pacing and framing for platform-specific formats.
  • Deliver edited excerpts formatted for advocacy and research audiences, where clarity and accuracy carry more weight than stylistic flourish.
  • Work from a production brief and hit agreed deadlines without requiring check-ins at every stage of the post-production workflow.
  • Integrate captions and subtitles into deliverables in line with accessibility standards for published content.
  • Maintain consistent editorial tone across a body of work, ensuring individual cuts feel like part of a coherent documentary series rather than standalone pieces.

What You Bring

  • Proficiency in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or a comparable non-linear editing system.
  • A working understanding of documentary editing principles, patient pacing, precise cut selection, and restraint over style.
  • Experience cutting interview-based or non-fiction content, whether through coursework, student projects, or freelance work.
  • Familiarity with caption and subtitle workflows is a plus, particularly for accessibility-focused deliverables.
  • Ability to interpret a creative brief and deliver without close supervision.

Why This Role

Healthful Stories is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a specific editorial mission, which means the work has a defined purpose and a real audience beyond internal stakeholders. Editors receive a production credit on published work and build a portfolio of health-focused documentary content that stands apart from generic short-form work. For editors early in their careers, that combination of credited output and sensitive subject matter experience is genuinely hard to find at this project scale.

Apply now for the Video Editor role at Healthful Stories and bring your documentary post-production skills to content that carries real weight.
