Job Position(s): Creature Supervisor
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

DNEG is hiring a Creature Supervisor to join their team in Sydney, Australia. This role sits at the intersection of rigging and CFX, responsible for shepherding CG creatures through the full VFX pipeline from initial design and build through to final render on high-end feature film productions. It suits an experienced creature specialist who has moved into supervision and is comfortable owning both the technical architecture and the people management side of a creature-heavy department.

About the Role

The Creature Supervisor works closely with the Head of Creature and the Pipeline team, driving departmental efficiency while maintaining quality across all creature output. Day to day, this means directing Creature TDs, setting methodology across rigging and simulation work, and keeping cross-department communication tight so nothing falls through the cracks in a complex VFX pipeline. The role carries real creative and technical weight, and the expectation is that you lead from the front, not just from a review screen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the full development of CG creature rigging and CFX from design and build stage through to final render, ensuring output meets the technical and creative bar required for feature film VFX.
  • Provide direction on pipeline architecture and methods, working with the Head of Creature to identify and implement improvements to departmental workflow.
  • Supervise and mentor Creature TDs through technical and creative production challenges, including hands-on implementation of complex creature work when required.
  • Coordinate with animation, FX, and other adjacent departments to ensure effective collaboration across the broader production pipeline.
  • Develop and deliver structured training schemes in collaboration with in-house trainers, raising the technical baseline of the team over time.
  • Maintain production deadlines across the creature department by identifying bottlenecks early and applying clear, on-the-spot problem solving.

What You Bring

  • Proven feature film VFX experience with significant creature and character work across multiple productions.
  • Deep working knowledge of rigging, muscle and skin simulation, cloth simulation, and hair and fur simulation.
  • Full working knowledge of Maya, with comfort across the more technical aspects of creature specialisation.
  • Prior experience supervising a creature team, with strong communication and mentorship skills to back it up.
  • Familiarity with typical creature-heavy post-production environments and the pipeline issues that come with them.
  • Scripting skills in MEL, Python, or VEX are a plus, as is experience with Ziva, Houdini, USD, or crowd simulation work.

Why This Role

DNEG is one of the most recognised names in feature film VFX, with a production slate that consistently includes major studio tentpole projects where creature work is central, not incidental. The Sydney studio offers the chance to operate at a senior level within a department that has genuine scope, proper resourcing, and a clear connection to global production. For a Creature Supervisor looking to work on material that matters, this is a substantive step.
