VFX Lighting Supervisor
- Full Time
- Los Angeles, United States
Untold Studios
Untold Studios is hiring a VFX Lighting Supervisor based in Los Angeles to lead all lighting and rendering across their production slate. This role sits at the top of the lighting department, owning the creative and technical benchmark for every shot and sequence that moves through the VFX pipeline. It suits a senior lighter who has already run teams on high-calibre projects and is ready to shape how a studio approaches lighting at a structural level.
About the Role
The VFX Lighting Supervisor at Untold Studios holds department-wide responsibility, overseeing lighting and rendering from early look development through final delivery across all active projects. Day to day, that means setting the visual bar for sequences, supporting artists through technical troubleshooting, and working alongside the Pipeline Supervisor to keep rendering workflows efficient and current. This is a heads-of-department position, not a senior artist role with a title bump.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and maintain the creative and technical standard for lighting and rendering across every project running through the Untold Studios VFX pipeline.
- Define the look for shots and sequences, building template scenes that give the broader lighting team a consistent, production-ready starting point.
- Manage the performance and career progression of each artist on the lighting team, including ongoing training material development.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and optimise rendering setups across projects of varying scale and complexity.
- Partner with Producers and Coordinators on scheduling, and provide on-set supervision when the production requires it.
- Drive recruitment for the lighting department in partnership with the Recruitment and Operations teams, and represent the studio at industry events and through professional outreach.
What You Bring
- A proven track record as a lighting lead or supervisor on high-end VFX or post-production projects, with credits that demonstrate consistent quality.
- Deep working knowledge of industry-standard rendering software and shader development, across multiple tools rather than a single package.
- Experience building and maintaining lighting workflows within a structured VFX pipeline environment.
- The ability to lead and motivate a team under production pressure while keeping quality standards intact.
- Confidence representing a studio externally, whether through speaking, publications, or professional community engagement.
Why This Role
Untold Studios is a production and VFX studio with a clear focus on quality output and a culture built around the people doing the work, not just the projects coming through the door. The studio offers a personal progression plan and direct investment in your development as a department head. The salary range for the VFX Lighting Supervisor role is $130,000 to $180,000.
Apply now for the VFX Lighting Supervisor position at Untold Studios and take the lead on shaping how a serious studio lights its work.
