Job Position(s): Modeling Artist - Expression of interest
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Rodeo FX in Montreal is building a talent pool of Modeling Artists for future opportunities on upcoming VFX productions. This role sits within the modeling department and focuses on delivering production-ready 3D assets, whether mechanical, organic, or stylized, that move cleanly through the VFX pipeline into look development, rigging, and effects. It suits mid-to-senior level artists with a track record of hitting topology and delivery standards on feature film or episodic television projects.

About the Role

The Modeling Artist works closely with modeling supervisors and adjacent departments to produce assets that hold up technically and aesthetically from first pass through final delivery. Day-to-day work involves interpreting concept art, photo reference, or scan data to build models that match the visual style of a given production, whether photoreal or stylized. Participation in dailies and cross-department feedback cycles is a regular part of the workflow at Rodeo FX.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build complex 3D models from concept art, photo references, or photogrammetry scan data, maintaining clean topology that meets production pipeline standards.
  • Produce optimized geometry suitable for handoff to rigging, look development, and VFX simulation departments.
  • Maintain accurate volumes, proportions, and surface detail even when working from incomplete or absent reference materials.
  • Manage UV layouts, correct mesh artifacts, and verify asset compliance with studio naming conventions and delivery specifications.
  • Document non-standard modeling decisions to ensure traceability across the production pipeline.
  • Explore and integrate emerging tools such as procedural modeling workflows, AI-assisted processes, and photogrammetry techniques into day-to-day practice.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrated experience as a Modeling Artist on feature film, television, or high-end commercial VFX productions.
  • Strong command of industry-standard modeling software such as Maya, ZBrush, or Houdini, with clean topology practices across organic and hard-surface asset types.
  • Ability to interpret creative briefs and deliver assets that align with both artistic direction and technical pipeline requirements.
  • Experience working within a structured VFX post-production workflow, including familiarity with asset management and delivery protocols.
  • Comfort receiving and applying feedback in dailies, with a clear approach to communicating blockers to supervisors and production.

Why This Role

Rodeo FX is a Montreal-based VFX studio with credits across major feature film and streaming productions, consistently working at the level where modeling quality directly affects final picture. Submitting an expression of interest positions you to be considered as openings arise, rather than competing in an open call after a project has already ramped up. The studio has an active internal culture around technique sharing and workflow development, which gives Modeling Artists real room to develop their craft alongside experienced colleagues.
