Riot Games
Riot Games is hiring a Senior VFX Artist for VALORANT, based at their Los Angeles studio. This role sits within the Real-Time VFX team, where the focus is on creating and directing visual effects for premium weapon skin lines, from early-stage creative exploration through to production handover with external partner studios. It is a strong fit for a senior VFX professional who has worked across the full VFX pipeline on stylized, character or weapon-driven content and is comfortable setting creative benchmarks as much as executing them.
About the Role
The Real-Time VFX team at Riot Games is responsible for the visual effects that define how VALORANT’s premium cosmetic content looks and feels in gameplay. This Senior VFX Artist will lead early creative development on high-tier weapon skins, establish the quality bar for deliverables, and act as the primary point of contact for partner studios during production. Day to day, the work moves between hands-on asset creation in Unreal Engine, providing detailed feedback and paintovers to external teams, and collaborating with technical art on VFX optimization and pipeline development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the stylistic and creative exploration phase for high-tier weapon skin lines, establishing the visual direction that partner studios follow during production.
- Deliver clear, actionable feedback to external VFX teams, including paintovers, to ensure readability, clarity, and thematic consistency across all deliverables.
- Partner with the VFX Manager to define VFX standards, execution strategies, and asset handover workflows for weapon skin productions.
- Work with the technical art team to resolve VFX-related technical issues and ensure assets meet real-time performance requirements within the VFX pipeline.
- Drive the development of new VFX features, tools, and workflow guidelines in collaboration with fellow artists across disciplines.
- Support the onboarding and training of new VFX artists by contributing resource materials and hands-on guidance.
What You Bring
- Five or more years of professional VFX experience across a range of art styles, ideally including AAA game production on stylized FPS titles.
- Deep fluency in VFX and art fundamentals, including timing, color theory, composition, motion, and in-engine readability.
- Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine and industry-standard VFX toolchains.
- Strong communication skills across disciplines and cultures, with basic English required and Mandarin proficiency a meaningful advantage for partner studio collaboration.
- Experience managing or mentoring artists, and a history of working with external production partners or outsource studios.
Why This Role
Riot Games built VALORANT into one of the most-played competitive shooters in the world, and the weapon skin program is a core part of how the game sustains its player community. The Senior VFX Artist on this team has real creative ownership over work that reaches millions of players, with visibility across the studio’s premium content slate. The role also sits at the intersection of in-house development and external studio collaboration, which offers a breadth of production experience that is rare in game VFX.
