Senior FX Artist – Permanent Role

Rodeo FX is hiring a Senior FX Artist for a permanent position at their Montreal studio. This role sits inside the 3D department, responsible for producing photorealistic simulations, including fire, smoke, fluids, destruction, and abstract effects, that go directly into final VFX shots on film and television productions. It suits an experienced Houdini artist who works with a high degree of autonomy and understands how FX integrates across a full VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Senior FX Artist works within the FX department alongside CG supervision, lighting, layout, and compositing teams to deliver technically sound and visually on-point effects across Rodeo FX’s production slate. Day to day, this means running simulations from initial setup through to cached output, attending dailies, incorporating feedback, and making sure your work is compatible with every downstream department. This is a permanent role, not a show contract, which means ongoing involvement across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce complex simulations including pyro, fluid, rigid body destruction, cloth, and abstract effects using Houdini’s Pyro, FLIP, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs toolsets.
• Own your FX tasks from first setup through to final render-ready output, maintaining clean, optimized caches and workfiles before any submission to the pipeline.
• Identify technical issues early and deliver practical solutions that keep shots moving through the post-production workflow without holding up other departments.
• Participate actively in dailies and integrate supervisor feedback in a way that serves the visual intent and pacing of each scene.
• Collaborate with the pipeline team to test or integrate new tools when production requirements call for it.
• Share techniques and contribute to documentation that improves how the FX department operates across the studio.

What You Bring

• Senior-level experience as an FX artist in a VFX studio environment, with credits on feature film or episodic television productions.
• Deep working knowledge of Houdini across Pyro, FLIP, RBD, and Vellum, with a track record of delivering optimized simulations at production scale.
• Ability to produce realistic estimates, flag delays early, and manage your own task list without close supervision.
• Experience coordinating your work with layout, lighting, and compositing to ensure effect compatibility throughout the VFX pipeline.
• A reel that demonstrates both technical precision and creative problem-solving across a range of simulation types.
