Job Type
The Friends is hiring a Screenwriter for Pre Production work on their Friend channel, a scripted Minecraft roleplay series based out of Southampton, England, UK. This is a development and pre-production writing role focused on transforming approved story outlines into fully production-ready scripts that serve voice cast, builders, and editors directly. The role suits a writer with a background in scripted YouTube content, serialised storytelling, or children’s media who understands how retention-driven narrative writing differs from traditional screenwriting.
About the Role
Friend is a scripted roleplay channel with over 1.75 million subscribers and 250 million long-form views in the past year, produced with a full in-house team across writing, voice performance, editing, and art. The Screenwriter sits at the top of the production pipeline, receiving beat-by-beat outlines and delivering finished scripts that every other department works from. The role starts as ad-hoc, project-by-project work before moving to a fixed part-time schedule of two days per week from mid-August 2026, running 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM BST.
Key Responsibilities
- Expand approved story outlines into complete, recording-ready scripts that voice actors can perform from and production can build directly against.
- Write in-character dialogue that holds continuity with established cast voices, serialised lore, and the tone of the existing episode catalogue.
- Structure each script for audience retention, with a strong cold-open hook, clear scene objectives, and pacing calibrated for a young audience aged 8 to 14.
- Deliver a finished script of 4,000 to 5,000 words per working day, maintaining that output consistently across the part-time schedule.
- Incorporate revision notes from the senior writer quickly and without requiring extended back-and-forth on direction.
- Maintain organised script files following the production team’s established naming conventions and delivery format.
What You Bring
- Demonstrable screenwriting or narrative writing ability, with samples or a portfolio available at the point of application.
- Deep familiarity with Minecraft and the YouTube roleplay content space, as a viewer or creator.
- Proven ability to write serialised characters and sustain ongoing lore across multiple episodes of scripted content.
- Comfort writing for children’s and young adult audiences without simplifying character or emotional stakes.
- Reliable availability to commit to the fixed BST schedule from mid-August 2026 onward.
Why This Role
The Friends operates a fully scripted production pipeline on a channel with genuine scale, which means the Screenwriter position carries real creative weight rather than functioning as a support role. Compensation is paid per finished script, and all new writers begin with a paid trial of one or two scripts before any ongoing arrangement is confirmed. For a writer with a background in scripted YouTube series, children’s media, or serialised fiction, this is a structured pre-production role with a clear schedule and consistent output expectations.
