Job Position(s): Lighting Supervisor
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Netflix is hiring a Lighting Supervisor for its Animation Studios in Sydney, Australia. This role sits at the intersection of artistry and technical execution, leading a lighting team to deliver fully lit, comp-ready shots and sequences that carry the cinematic vision of an animated feature film. It suits an experienced lighting professional who has worked their way up through feature animation or high-end VFX and is ready to own the quality bar for a full production.

About the Role

The Lighting Supervisor works within Netflix Animation Studios on an upcoming animated feature, sitting at the center of a pipeline that connects Surfacing, FX, CFX, Matte Painting, and Compositing into a coherent final image. Day-to-day, this means running dailies, setting lighting rigs and templates, troubleshooting render issues, and keeping a team of lighting artists on track and producing work that holds up at every stage of the VFX pipeline. The role is hybrid, with a minimum of three days per week on-site at the Sydney studio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a lighting team across an animated feature production, assigning work strategically and delivering clear, direct feedback in dailies and supervisor reviews.
  • Collaborate with the VFX Supervisor, Head of Cinematography, and Production Designer to lock the lighting style, color palette, and visual quality bar for the show.
  • Supervise the lighting of shots and sequences to ensure consistency with story, character performance, and visual continuity across the film.
  • Build or refine hero lighting setups on complex or reference-setting shots to establish the technical and artistic approach for the wider team.
  • Partner with Technical Supervisors and pipeline TDs to define lighting tools, templates, and workflows that keep the production moving efficiently.
  • Provide production management with accurate assessments of lighting complexity and department progress to support realistic scheduling and prioritization.

What You Bring

  • Significant experience as a lighting artist in feature animation, VFX production, or high-end episodic television, including time in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • A strong reel demonstrating cinematic lighting and rendering across a range of moods, with a clear understanding of color, tone, and storytelling through light.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools including Maya, Katana, or Houdini, and renderers such as Arnold, RenderMan, or comparable production renderers.
  • A working understanding of how lighting interacts with Modeling, Surfacing, FX, CFX, and Compositing within a large-scale animation studio pipeline.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate artistic intent into technical direction across departments.

Why This Role

Netflix Animation Studios is building a permanent production presence across three global locations, with Sydney as one of its core hubs, meaning this is a staff role with real longevity rather than a project-to-project contract. The production slate is focused on original animated features, giving a Lighting Supervisor room to shape the visual language of a film from the ground up. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, mental health support, retirement programs, and family-forming and leave provisions.

Apply now for the Lighting Supervisor role at Netflix and bring your lighting supervision experience to one of the most ambitious animation studios currently building in Australia.
