Job Position(s): Lead Motion Editor: VFX Retargeting & Mentorship
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Dormont Manufacturing Co is hiring a Lead Motion Editor for its ILM London studio based at Lacon House in London, England. This role sits at the centre of the motion capture pipeline, responsible for retargeting, refining, and blending motion data across human, biped, prop, and quadruped rigs to deliver final-quality performances for feature film production. It suits a technically grounded motion editor who is equally comfortable driving pipeline decisions and bringing junior artists up to speed.

About the Role

The Lead Motion Editor works within the motion capture department, reporting directly to the Motion Edit Supervisor and feeding clean, production-ready data into the broader VFX pipeline. Day to day, that means processing and quality-checking mocap takes, making non-destructive edits that hold up through multiple downstream passes, and keeping the work moving across a slate of high-volume feature film projects. This is a lead position, so a meaningful portion of each week involves reviewing junior work and making calls on technical approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retarget raw motion capture data onto character rigs spanning human, biped, prop, and quadruped asset types, maintaining data integrity across each transfer.
  • Refine and blend motion data non-destructively, ensuring edits remain reversible and traceable within the post-production workflow.
  • Partner with the Motion Edit Supervisor to set quality benchmarks and resolve technical issues before they reach the animation team.
  • Mentor junior motion editors through hands-on review, workflow guidance, and clear technical feedback tied to production standards.
  • Identify bottlenecks in the motion capture pipeline and propose process improvements that hold up under feature film production schedules.
  • Maintain organised, well-documented scene files so that any artist on the team can pick up and continue work without losing context.

What You Bring

  • Several years of production experience in motion editing or motion capture cleanup at a VFX studio or animation studio.
  • Demonstrable credits on feature film or high-end episodic television productions involving mocap-heavy sequences.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard motion editing software, with a solid understanding of retargeting workflows for multiple rig types.
  • Experience mentoring or leading a small team within a structured VFX pipeline environment.
  • Familiarity with quadruped rigs and the specific challenges they present during data cleanup and retargeting.

Why This Role

ILM London is one of the few studios where a Lead Motion Editor works directly on projects at the scale of major tentpole feature film production, with the infrastructure and team depth to match. The Lacon House studio is an established facility with a clear production pipeline and genuine room to influence how the motion capture discipline develops. For a motion editor ready to step into a lead role, the volume and variety of work here is hard to find elsewhere in London.
