Job Position(s): Lead Compositor - Hybrid VFX Leader & Mentorship
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Industrial Light & Magic is hiring a Lead Compositor to join their compositing department in London, England. This role sits at the intersection of creative oversight and technical execution, responsible for driving shot quality and visual consistency across full sequences in a live-action VFX pipeline. It suits an experienced compositor who is ready to step into a leadership position and own both the work and the people doing it.

About the Role

The compositing department at ILM London works across high-end film and episodic television productions, and this Lead Compositor position places you at the center of that post-production workflow, reporting directly to the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor. Day to day, you are reviewing artist work, making creative and technical calls on shots, flagging schedule risks, and keeping the sequence moving toward delivery. The role operates on a hybrid basis with two days per week on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide the creative and technical direction of on-set composite shots, ensuring quality remains consistent from first light to final delivery across assigned sequences.
  • Work directly with the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to align on look development, flag issues early, and feed information back into the production schedule.
  • Manage day-to-day workloads across the compositing team, balancing staffing against deadlines and adjusting shot assignments as priorities shift.
  • Maintain morale within the team during high-pressure delivery periods, acting as a first point of contact for compositor concerns before they escalate.
  • Contribute to look development decisions that establish the visual language of a sequence, ensuring individual shots read correctly within the full VFX pipeline.
  • Perform hands-on compositing work in Nuke when required, setting the technical standard for the team through your own output.

What You Bring

  • Several years of compositing experience on feature film production or high-end episodic television, with at least one prior lead or senior credit.
  • Deep working knowledge of Nuke, with the ability to build and troubleshoot complex node trees across a range of shot types.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based production environments and the pipeline conventions common to large VFX facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team of artists under tight post-production deadlines without sacrificing shot quality.
  • Strong communication skills with both supervisors and working artists, grounded in an understanding of the full VFX pipeline from plate to comp.

Why This Role

Industrial Light & Magic has a production slate that spans the largest film and television projects in the industry, and the London studio has become a serious hub for that work. For a Lead Compositor looking to grow into a supervisory track, few places offer the combination of project scale, pipeline sophistication, and senior mentorship that ILM provides. This is a role where your decisions genuinely shape what ends up on screen.
