About the Role
The Features Editor works inside National Geographic’s editorial team, contributing to the brand’s print magazine and digital content pipeline with equal weight on both. Day to day, this person is managing freelance writers, shaping story packages, and keeping projects on schedule through multiple production stages. The work ranges from long-form profiles and investigative features to podcast scripts and data-driven graphics packages.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission and edit features, packages, and franchises that serve National Geographic’s editorial mission across print and digital editorial workflows.
- Manage production timelines to ensure stories meet word counts, factual accuracy standards, and platform-specific specs from assignment through final edit.
- Develop and maintain a roster of freelance writers, with a deliberate focus on bringing in new voices and perspectives that expand the brand’s coverage.
- Collaborate with the Senior Manager of Features on project development, contracts, scheduling, and production stage tracking.
- Work cross-functionally with communications, marketing, and business development teams to support editorial projects that intersect with promotional needs.
- Bring original ideas for new ways to cover science, history, archaeology, medical science, and technology within the National Geographic content framework.
What You Bring
- Four or more years of editing experience with demonstrated growth in editorial responsibility at a media organization.
- Proven expertise in one or more of National Geographic’s core subject areas: science journalism, history, archaeology, innovation, or medical reporting.
- Working knowledge of Adobe products, Microsoft Office, editorial CMS platforms including K4 and InCopy, and digital media platforms. Familiarity with AirTable is a plus.
- A freelance writer network and a track record of growing print and digital audiences across demographics.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
