Job Position(s): CG Modeling Artist
Project Type: TV Series
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Atomic Cartoons is hiring a CG Modeling Artist to join their Vancouver studio on a new CG production. This role sits within the modeling department and is responsible for building show-style character, prop, and environment models that move cleanly through both the rigging and look development pipelines. It suits a junior or mid-level modeler who has shipped production work before and can operate with a reasonable degree of independence on a live show.

About the Role

The CG Modeling Artist works directly alongside Look Development Artists and Riggers to ensure assets are technically sound from the moment they leave modeling, which is a critical handoff point in any CG animation pipeline. Day to day, this means building models from 2D concept reference or scan data, incorporating supervisor feedback efficiently, and flagging any pre-production or shot production issues before they become downstream problems. Atomic Cartoons has produced animation across preschool, action-adventure, and comedy genres for major brands including LEGO and Star Wars, so the modeling bar is set by recognizable, broadcast-quality work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build show-style CG models from scratch that meet the aesthetic and technical standards established for the production, working from 2D design reference or scan data.
  • Coordinate with Riggers on character models to confirm topology and edge flow support clean deformation through the rigging pipeline.
  • Work with Look Development Artists to ensure geometry, UVs, and asset structure integrate properly into the look development and shading pipeline.
  • Take notes from supervisors and directors and turn around revisions within production-schedule constraints, without requiring repeated direction.
  • Communicate proactively with other department supervisors when issues surface during pre-production or shot production, and come prepared with proposed solutions.
  • Maintain clean line flow across organic and hard-surface models, with a working understanding of how environment assets function within the broader CG animation pipeline.

What You Bring

  • Prior professional experience as a CG Modeling Artist on at least one produced animation or VFX production.
  • Proficiency in Maya, ZBrush, and/or Mudbox at a production level.
  • Demonstrated ability to create complex, accurate models from 2D reference or scan data with clean topology.
  • Solid understanding of organic and hard-surface modeling techniques, with foundational knowledge of environment modeling.
  • Ability to work largely self-directed within the production schedule of an episodic animation studio.

Why This Role

Atomic Cartoons is a B Corp certified animation studio with a track record of delivering high-end CG animation for globally recognized properties, which means the work here is visible and the pipeline is mature. The studio is known for an artist-driven culture, and the Vancouver team has credits on original productions like The Last Kids on Earth alongside major licensed titles. For a CG Modeling Artist looking to build credits within a structured, full-service animation studio, this is a legitimate step.
