Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: $45,000 - $50,000/year

Lionsgate is hiring an Assistant, Theatrical Music based out of their Santa Monica, CA offices. This role sits inside the Theatrical Music department and directly supports the SVP in moving music through the full film production pipeline, from script breakdowns to final cue sheets. It’s a good fit for someone who knows their way around music licensing and sync and wants to build a career on the studio side of the business.

About the Role

The Theatrical Music department at Lionsgate touches every wide release and streaming title the studio puts out, working across a slate that includes franchises like John Wick and The Hunger Games alongside original theatrical films. The Assistant, Theatrical Music is the operational backbone of that department, keeping composer submissions, project budgets, and music briefs organized while communication flows between production, legal, and creative teams. Day to day, this is a mix of script reading, cataloging audio files, and managing the SVP’s calendar and logistics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and break down scripts for music needs, identifying scenes that require source music, score, or licensed tracks.
  • Source, research, and organize composer reels and music submissions for active theatrical film projects, maintaining a cataloged archive by project.
  • Manage the SVP’s calendar, prepare meeting materials, take notes, and track follow-ups across multiple productions simultaneously.
  • Send project briefs to composers and artists, then catalog all submitted music in a way the full department can access and reference.
  • Maintain organized files covering cue sheets, production documents, scripts, and both current and historical project budgets.
  • Coordinate communication between the Theatrical Music department and internal teams as well as external partners including labels, publishers, and sync agencies.

What You Bring

  • A bachelor’s degree and two to three years of experience working in music supervision, sync licensing, or at a label or publisher is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of music licensing terminology, copyright, and publishing as they apply to film and television production.
  • Familiarity with film and TV composers across genres, and a genuine ear for matching music to tone and narrative.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Spotify, iTunes, Box, and Scenechronize.
  • Awareness of current music trends, artists, and how social media drives song discovery relevant to sync.

Why This Role

Lionsgate is one of the few studios operating at full theatrical scale as an independent, which means the music department here has real creative weight on films that reach wide release. Compensation for the Assistant, Theatrical Music position is $45,000 to $50,000 annually, with full medical, vision, and dental coverage, 401(k) matching, and paid time off. For someone serious about a career in music supervision or studio music licensing, this is direct access to how that work gets done at the feature film level.

Apply now for the Assistant, Theatrical Music role at Lionsgate and bring your knowledge of music and film production into one of the industry’s most active studios.
