Artiste d’éclairage/ Lighting Artist (Featurette)
- Full Time
- Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Bardel Entertainment
Bardel Entertainment is hiring a Lighting Artist for a featurette production based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This role sits within the CG lighting department, responsible for lighting and rendering shots through a Katana and RenderMan pipeline and delivering composited output via Nuke. It’s a strong fit for a mid-to-senior level artist who knows their way around a render farm and can hold visual continuity across a sequence without constant supervision.
About the Role
The Lighting Artist works within Bardel Entertainment’s feature animation pipeline, contributing to a featurette project from lighting setup through final comp delivery. Day-to-day work involves building and modifying lighting scenes in Katana, configuring AOVs in RenderMan, and comping shots to final look in Nuke, including matte painting projection on cards and geometry. Production quotas and scheduling are tracked through ShotGrid, so familiarity with that kind of dashboard-driven workflow is part of the job.
Key Responsibilities
- Light and render CG shots in Katana, setting up AOVs in RenderMan and optimizing render settings for clean, efficient output on the render farm.
- Composite shots to final look in Nuke, including projecting matte paintings onto cards or geometry supplied by the DMP department.
- Maintain shot continuity across sequences, ensuring lighting reads consistently from cut to cut before handoff to compositing.
- Quality check render layers at output to catch technical issues before they reach the compositing stage.
- Troubleshoot Katana files for pipeline and technical issues, escalating blockers to the lead or supervisor in time to keep production on schedule.
- Support less experienced artists on the team with guidance on lighting technique and pipeline procedure.
What You Bring
- Demonstrated experience as a Lighting Artist in feature film production or feature animation, with credits that reflect sequence-level ownership.
- Proficiency in Katana for lighting scene creation and modification within a VFX pipeline.
- Working knowledge of RenderMan, including AOV configuration and render optimization.
- Compositing experience in Nuke, including matte painting projection work.
- Familiarity with ShotGrid for tracking production quotas and daily review prep.
Why This Role
Bardel Entertainment has been producing animation for over 35 years, with a track record across feature and episodic television that gives artists real pipeline depth and production variety. This Lighting Artist position offers direct involvement in a featurette from lighting through final composite, which is a broader creative scope than many single-department roles in animation studio environments. Montreal’s production community adds further context for artists building a long-term career in Canadian animation.
Apply now for the Lighting Artist role at Bardel Entertainment and bring your CG lighting experience to a featurette production in Montreal.
