Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Rodeo FX in Montreal is building a pipeline of interest for a Junior Groom Artist (Blender) ahead of anticipated openings on a confidential production. This is a character and creature department role focused on producing hair and fur descriptions for digital assets within the studio’s VFX pipeline. It suits an artist who has foundational grooming skills and wants to develop those credits inside a structured, supervisor-led environment at a recognised visual effects studio.

About the Role

This is a speculative application position, meaning Rodeo FX is not filling the seat immediately but expects to open Junior Groom Artist roles in the coming weeks and wants qualified candidates ready to move. The work sits within the Character department, under the direction of both a Groom Supervisor and a Character Supervisor, and feeds directly into the animation production workflow. Day to day, this person grooms, calibrates, and where required shades hair and fur on characters, creatures, and props based on approved concept designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create hair and fur grooms for animated characters, creatures, and props in accordance with the established artistic direction for each production asset.
  • Ensure technical delivery of assets meets the standards of the studio’s VFX pipeline and production workflow at every stage of the grooming process.
  • Collaborate with the Modeling, Rigging, and Surfacing departments to address the technical requirements specific to each discipline.
  • Execute feedback and corrections requested by the Groom Supervisor and director within the allocated production schedule.
  • Contribute to the development of grooming tools used within the department as production needs evolve.
  • Organise personal workload and prepare asset presentations for review by the Supervisor and client within coordinator-set deadlines and quotas.

What You Bring

  • Hands-on experience with Blender as a primary grooming tool, with a portfolio that demonstrates hair and fur work on production or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with character asset pipelines in a feature film or animation studio context.
  • Ability to read and interpret concept art and production design references to deliver technically compliant grooms.
  • Understanding of how grooming intersects with shading, rigging, and simulation within a visual effects workflow.
  • Comfort working under supervisor direction while communicating proactively when technical or artistic questions arise.
