Project Type: Short Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Economist Films is hiring freelance Video Editors to join its editorial video department in London. This role sits at the centre of a high-output digital video operation, covering everything from short-form vertical content for social platforms to long-form interview and discussion shows, including the flagship programme “The Insider”. It suits editors with a newsroom background who are comfortable moving between formats and working at pace within a current-affairs post-production workflow.

About the Role

The editorial video team at Economist Films produces content published across its app, website, and social channels, blending journalistic analysis with stylised motion graphics and studio-based production. Day to day, editors work directly with executive producers and senior journalists, cutting across multiple projects simultaneously within a demanding news cycle. The post-production workflow spans vertical short-form, landscape long-form, and studio interview formats, so range across editing disciplines is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit short-form vertical videos and long-form interview shows from assembly cut through to delivery, maintaining editorial and visual consistency across formats.
  • Design and implement motion graphics within post-production, including 2D animation, keyed elements, and composited sequences.
  • Storyboard ideas in collaboration with producers and the wider creative team during pre-production planning.
  • Manage media, data, and post-production systems in line with the department’s digital video pipeline.
  • Handle music licensing and rights management across published content on digital and social platforms.
  • Identify efficiency gains within the editing process, including through emerging AI tools and current industry best practices.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience as a video editor with a portfolio demonstrating work across both short-form social content and long-form digital video production.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, with After Effects experience covering visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing.
  • Background editing current-affairs or news content within a newsroom environment, with experience managing tight editorial deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple edits across a fast news cycle while taking editorial ownership from brief to delivery.
  • Legal right to work in the United Kingdom.

Why This Role

Economist Films carries genuine editorial credibility, and its video department has produced award-winning content with access to high-profile interview subjects and world-leading journalism. This is a freelance engagement with stated potential to convert to a permanent, full-time position as the team’s digital video output continues to grow. For editors looking to build a long-term foothold in quality factual and news-based digital video production, the runway here is real.

Apply now for the Video Editor role at Economist Films and bring your post-production experience to one of London’s most respected editorial video operations.
