Job Position(s): Senior FX Artist – Permanent Role
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Rodeo FX is hiring a Senior FX Artist for a permanent position at their studio in Montreal, Canada. This role sits within the 3D pipeline and is responsible for designing and delivering complex simulations, including fire, smoke, destruction, fluids, and abstract effects, across feature film and episodic television productions. It suits an experienced FX professional who works with a high degree of autonomy and has a real command of procedural simulation tools.

About the Role

The Senior FX Artist works embedded in the FX department, reporting into FX and CG supervision while interfacing daily with lighting, layout, and compositing. On any given day, this person is building and refining Houdini simulations, managing caches, attending dailies, and integrating notes from supervision to keep shots moving through the VFX pipeline. The work spans a range of effect types and project styles, requiring both technical precision and an eye for how effects serve the narrative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce complex simulations across fire, smoke, explosions, liquids, destruction, and magical or abstract effects, working within established artistic and technical guidelines.
  • Use Houdini across Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs to generate effects that are optimized for the production pipeline and adaptable to revision.
  • Own assigned FX tasks from initial setup through to final render, maintaining quality control over workfiles and caches before every submission.
  • Check effect compatibility with layout, lighting, and compositing departments to ensure clean integration across the VFX pipeline.
  • Provide accurate time estimates to production, flag risks early, and adjust priorities in response to schedule changes.
  • Contribute to departmental knowledge by sharing tools or techniques with colleagues and participating in the documentation of FX workflows.

What You Bring

  • Several years of professional FX experience at a visual effects studio, with credits across feature film production or high-end episodic television.
  • Deep working knowledge of Houdini, specifically Pyro, Flip, RBD, and Vellum solvers.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver photorealistic simulations independently, without close technical supervision.
  • Experience collaborating across departments in a structured VFX pipeline environment.
  • Strong communication habits around deadlines, technical limitations, and production coordination.

Why This Role

Rodeo FX is a well-established visual effects studio with a consistent slate of high-profile film and television credits, and a reputation for producing technically demanding work at a senior level. This permanent position offers stability within a studio that invests in its FX department, including the development of internal tools and continued refinement of production workflows. Montreal is a strong base for VFX work, with a deep local talent pool and an active production community.
