SENIOR FX Artist – Permanent role

Rodeo FX is hiring a Senior FX Artist for a permanent position based in Toronto, Canada. This role sits inside the 3D VFX pipeline, responsible for building and delivering complex simulations including fire, smoke, destruction, fluids, and abstract effects for film and television productions. It suits an experienced FX artist who can own their work from initial setup through final render with minimal hand-holding.

About the Role

The Senior FX Artist works within Rodeo FX’s FX department, collaborating directly with FX and CG supervision as well as lighting, layout, and compositing teams across active production slates. Day to day, this person is building Houdini setups, managing caches, attending dailies, and integrating notes against real shot deadlines. The role is permanent, meaning you are part of the studio’s core crew rather than brought in for a single project.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce complex simulations across Houdini’s Pyro, Flip, RBD, and Vellum solvers while meeting the artistic and technical guidelines set by production.
• Manage assigned FX tasks from initial setup through cache delivery and final rendering with a high degree of autonomy.
• Ensure cache optimization and workfile cleanliness before any submission into the VFX pipeline.
• Check effect compatibility with layout, lighting, and compositing departments to maintain shot integrity across disciplines.
• Provide realistic time estimates and communicate early when a shot carries risk of delay, working with production to adjust priorities.
• Contribute to FX department documentation and share techniques with fellow artists to raise the overall quality of the team’s output.

What You Bring

• Several years of production experience as an FX artist on feature film or episodic television projects.
• Strong working knowledge of Houdini, specifically Pyro, Flip, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs.
• A track record of delivering photorealistic simulations, including destruction, fluid, and atmospheric effects, under production conditions.
• Ability to identify technical problems in a live VFX pipeline and propose solutions without waiting for supervision to diagnose the issue.
• Experience participating in dailies and incorporating supervisor feedback across multiple rounds of revisions.
