Production Sound Mixer

We are seeking a Detroit-based Audio Mixer / Location Sound Recordist with experience in documentary production and podcast recording. The ideal candidate will be comfortable capturing high-quality audio for both sit-down interviews and run-and-gun field production, while also providing post-production podcast mixing services.

Key Responsibilities

• Record and mix high-quality location sound for documentary productions.
• Capture clean dialogue during sit-down interviews, multi-person conversations, and field-based scenes.
• Manage wireless microphone systems and boom operation to ensure consistent audio quality.
• Monitor audio levels and troubleshoot sound issues on location.
• Collaborate with producers, directors, and camera crews to ensure audio requirements are met.
• Organize and deliver properly labeled audio files after shoots.
• Mix and edit podcast episodes, including dialogue cleanup, leveling, noise reduction, EQ, compression, and final mastering.
• Maintain and transport professional audio equipment to production locations.

Requirements

• Based in the Detroit metropolitan area.
• Proven experience working on documentary productions and/or podcast projects.
• Strong understanding of field audio recording techniques and best practices.
• Comfortable working in both controlled interview environments and dynamic field settings.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Availability for local production days and post-production work as needed.

Required Equipment

Candidates must own or have regular access to professional audio recording equipment, including:

• Field recorder such as a Sound Devices MixPre-6, Zoom F8n, or comparable professional recorder.
• Boom microphone setup.
• Multiple wireless lavalier microphone systems.
