Job Position(s): Paint & Roto Artist
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Framestore is hiring experienced Paint and Roto Artists to join their VFX team in London, United Kingdom. Working within the paint and roto department, this role focuses on producing high-quality mattes and clean plates that allow compositors to seamlessly integrate CG and live-action elements across feature film and episodic productions. It suits artists with a strong grasp of frame-by-frame techniques and a working knowledge of the full post-production workflow from plate delivery to final composite.

About the Role

Paint and Roto Artists at Framestore sit at the intersection of plate preparation and compositing, working directly alongside compositors to ensure CG holdouts, rig removals, and matte work are delivered clean and on schedule. Day-to-day, this means moving between roto, paint, and lightweight composite tasks across multiple shots within the VFX pipeline. The volume and complexity of work reflects the calibre of productions Framestore takes on, so accuracy in bidding and efficiency in delivery are both part of the job.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create roto mattes for compositor use, with a clear understanding of how those mattes function within the broader composite.
  • Remove wires, rigs, and tracking markers using patch-based and frame-by-frame paint techniques, with de-graining and re-graining applied before shots leave the department.
  • Generate foreground mattes for animators working in Maya, and create 1, 2, and 4 point tracks informed by an understanding of 3D tracking principles.
  • Work within Nuke’s 3D environment to project clean plates using geo data and UV projections, and use expressions within Nuke to support and streamline paint tasks.
  • Accurately bid shot lengths for paint and roto work, and manage shot directories using Linux as part of the studio pipeline.
  • Complete basic composites in Nuke demonstrating keying, grading, re-timing, and screen insertion, while contributing to the development and use of Framestore-specific gizmos and workflows.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience as a Paint and Roto Artist on feature film or high-end television productions.
  • Proficiency in Nuke, including its 3D toolset, expressions, and compositing functions.
  • Practical experience with Maya in the context of foreground matte delivery for animation.
  • Comfort working in a Linux environment for file management and shot directory creation.
  • A track record of accurate shot bidding and meeting deadlines within a structured VFX pipeline.

Why This Role

Framestore has a long production history across major studio films and premium television, giving artists consistent access to complex, high-profile work that develops real technical range. The paint and roto department here is a genuine craft environment where knowledge sharing and workflow development are treated as part of the job, not afterthoughts. For artists who want to grow their compositing knowledge alongside their core discipline, the exposure to Nuke-based workflows here is substantial.
