Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Mikros Animation is collecting expressions of interest for a Mid Groom Artist (Blender) based in Montreal, Canada. This role sits within the character department and is responsible for producing hair groom descriptions for 3D animated characters, animals, and props, working in alignment with the project’s artistic direction and VFX pipeline. It’s a good fit for a mid-level groom artist who’s comfortable bridging the gap between technical compliance and creative problem-solving on feature film production.

About the Role

The Mid Groom Artist (Blender) works under the Groom Lead and Character Supervisor, translating concept art and model sheets into production-ready hair assets within an established animation studio pipeline. This is an expression of interest listing, with Mikros Animation anticipating new positions to open in the coming weeks. Day to day, this person is grooming and shading assets, attending approval presentations, and coordinating with modeling, rigging, and surfacing teams to keep assets technically sound across departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create hair groom effects on 3D animated characters, animals, and props using Blender, following the established artistic direction for each production asset.
  • Ensure all delivered assets meet the technical specifications of the animation studio pipeline before handoff to downstream departments.
  • Shade hair assets as required by production needs, working within the surfacing workflow to maintain visual consistency across the project.
  • Contribute to the development of grooming tools used within the department, flagging technical gaps and proposing practical solutions.
  • Prepare and organize assets for supervisor and director review sessions, executing corrections promptly to meet production quotas and deadlines.
  • Communicate proactively with modeling, rigging, and surfacing teams to resolve cross-department technical requirements before they become pipeline bottlenecks.

What You Bring

  • Mid-level experience in character grooming within an animation studio or VFX pipeline environment, ideally on feature film production.
  • Hands-on proficiency in Blender as a primary grooming tool, with a solid understanding of hair simulation and shading workflows.
  • Familiarity reading and interpreting concept art and model sheets to produce accurate, production-compliant groom assets.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workload independently across multiple assets while hitting production deadlines.
  • Experience working within structured department pipelines alongside modeling, rigging, and surfacing teams.

Why This Role

Mikros Animation has a strong track record in animated feature film production, with a Montreal studio that runs structured, craft-focused pipelines across its character and effects departments. Submitting an expression of interest now means your profile is reviewed before the formal hiring process opens, which is a practical advantage in a competitive market. This is a real mid-level opportunity at an established animation studio, not a junior stepping stone.

Submit your expression of interest for the Mid Groom Artist (Blender) role at Mikros Animation and get your name in front of the team before positions go live.
