FX Supervisor

DNEG is hiring an FX Supervisor to join their team in Sydney, Australia. This role sits within the FX department and is responsible for leading a team of FX Artists through the full arc of feature film VFX production, delivering photorealistic simulations of fire, smoke, water, explosions, and other physical effects. It suits a senior Houdini specialist who has moved from an FX TD background into supervision and knows how to hold both the artistic and technical sides of a department together under production pressure.

About the Role

The FX Supervisor works directly with the VFX Supervisor, Head of FX, and departmental supervisors across live action VFX productions at feature film level. Day to day, this means reviewing artist output, solving pipeline problems, making calls on simulation approach, and keeping quality on track against schedule. The role carries genuine creative and technical authority within the VFX pipeline, not just a sign-off function.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the FX team through daily production, reviewing simulations and providing clear artistic and technical notes to artists at all levels.
• Drive the quality of particle and voxel-based rendering across shots, ensuring physical simulations hold up in the context of live action plates.
• Collaborate with the VFX Supervisor and Head of FX to define the FX approach for each sequence, balancing creative ambition with delivery timelines.
• Identify and resolve pipeline issues as they arise, working across departments to keep the FX workflow moving without bottlenecks.
• Train and mentor FX Artists, building team capability across Houdini and simulation techniques throughout the production.
• Manage project workload across the FX team, tracking priorities and making resource calls in coordination with the Producer.

What You Bring

• A minimum of 8 years working as an FX TD, with previous credits as an FX Supervisor on feature film productions.
• Extensive working knowledge of Houdini, including smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam, and explosion simulations.
• Proven feature film experience in live action VFX, with a strong understanding of what photorealistic physical simulation requires at that level.
• Familiarity with Python, HScript, or MEL scripting is a plus, as is experience with Maya or equivalent 3D software.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and train teams, with strong organisational skills and a track record of delivering under production constraints.
