Rodeo FX is hiring multiple Senior FX Artists at their Montreal, Canada studio. This role sits inside the 3D pipeline and is responsible for producing photorealistic simulations, including fire, smoke, fluid dynamics, destruction, and abstract effects, across feature film and episodic television productions. It suits an experienced FX artist who works well within a supervised VFX pipeline and can carry complex shots from initial setup through to final render with a high degree of autonomy.

About the Role

Senior FX Artists at Rodeo FX work within the FX department alongside CG supervision, lighting, and compositing teams to deliver technically sound and visually on-point effects. Day-to-day work involves running Houdini simulations, managing caches, attending dailies, and integrating feedback from leads and supervisors across active productions. The role crosses multiple project types, requiring the ability to shift between the visual style and pacing demands of different shows or films.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce complex Houdini simulations using Pyro, FLIP, RBD, and Vellum systems, from lookdev through cache delivery, in line with the artistic direction of each project.
• Maintain rigorous quality control of workfiles, caches, and scene setups before any submission into the VFX pipeline.
• Identify and resolve technical issues quickly, including cache optimization, setup stability, and cross-department compatibility with layout, lighting, and compositing.
• Participate constructively in dailies, communicate realistic estimates to production, and flag risks of delay before they become problems.
• Collaborate with the pipeline team to integrate or test new tools when project requirements call for it.
• Share techniques and working methods with colleagues, and contribute to documentation that improves FX department practices.

What You Bring

• Solid senior-level experience as an FX artist on feature film or episodic television productions.
• Deep proficiency in Houdini, specifically Pyro, FLIP, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs, with the ability to build and manage complex, optimized simulations.
• A track record of delivering photorealistic effects across a range of simulation types, including destruction, fluids, and abstract or stylized effects.
• Familiarity with post-production workflow standards, including how FX caches and outputs integrate downstream into lighting and comp.
• Clear, direct communication habits with leads, production coordinators, and artists across departments.
