- Generalist Supervisor Sydney, Australia
DNEG
DNEG is hiring an Environment Generalist Supervisor to join their team in Sydney, Australia. This role sits within the Environments department and is responsible for establishing and delivering the look of digital environments across feature film VFX production, from initial creative development through to final shot delivery. It suits an experienced environment artist who has moved into supervision and knows how to balance artistic direction with the technical demands of a large-scale VFX pipeline.
About the Role
The Environment Generalist Supervisor reports directly to the Visual Effects Supervisor and Digital Supervisor, owning the creative and technical output of the Environments team across feature film projects. Day to day, this means building and refining workflows for environment creation, including render testing, optimising assets, and publishing to the pipeline for shot propagation. You will work across departments, coordinating with other supervisors and production to define schedules and ensure clean handoffs at every stage.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain the look of digital environments in line with the VFX and DFX supervisors’ creative direction, ensuring consistency across all shots.
- Lead the Environments team in developing best practice workflows for efficient environment creation within a feature film VFX pipeline.
- Oversee modelling, texturing, layout, lighting, and digital matte painting output, maintaining high quality standards across all deliverables.
- Work directly with production to define delivery schedules and milestones, flagging risks and managing the team’s workload accordingly.
- Develop concept art into photo-real environments using shoot data including HDRIs, photogrammetry, and Lidar reference.
- Coordinate with other department supervisors to ensure clear, accurate asset delivery across departments throughout the production.
What You Bring
- Proven experience as an Environment Supervisor on feature film VFX productions, with a track record of delivering complex environment work.
- Strong working knowledge of Maya, Mari, and Nuke, alongside a thorough understanding of 3D and 2.5D production pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with procedural city and terrain generation, scattering tools, and photogrammetry workflows.
- High-level understanding of compositing and how environment assets integrate into the broader post-production workflow.
- Genuine knowledge of geology, geography, meteorology, and architecture as they apply to building believable digital environments.
Why This Role
DNEG is one of the most consistently credited VFX studios in feature film production, with a substantial body of work across major studio releases. The Sydney studio is a permanent staff position with a hybrid work arrangement, requiring at least two days per week on-site. Candidates not currently based in Sydney will need to relocate to be eligible.
Apply now for the Environment Generalist Supervisor role at DNEG and bring your environment supervision experience to one of the industry’s leading VFX studios.
