Job Position(s): Creature FX Technical Director [ Speculative application for October/November 2026]
Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Framestore is accepting speculative applications for a Creature FX Technical Director based in Montreal, Canada, for an anticipated start in October or November 2026. This role sits within the Creature FX department and is responsible for delivering dynamic simulations, including cloth, hair, muscle, and skin, that drive the final look of characters and creatures before they reach the Lighting team. It suits a mid to senior level TD who is comfortable owning simulation work from rig build through to shot finaling inside a structured VFX pipeline.

About the Role

Creature FX at Framestore operates at the intersection of character rigging, animation, and look development, feeding finished simulation assets downstream to Lighting on feature film productions. Day to day, this person is building and executing simulation rigs, responding to notes from supervisors and clients, and working closely with Modeling, Rigging, Animation, Groom, and Lighting to keep creature work tracking through the pipeline. Framestore has a long track record on large-scale creature-driven features, so the volume and complexity of work here reflects that.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build simulation rigs for characters and creatures using Maya, nCloth, nHair, and a combination of third-party and proprietary tools.
  • Execute shots using those rigs and deliver finaled assets to the Lighting department at the required quality bar.
  • Liaise directly with Modeling, Rigging, Animation, Lighting, and Groom departments to support a clean creature workflow across productions.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental tools and techniques as part of the broader Creature FX team.
  • Present work in reviews with leads, supervisors, and clients, and action notes and feedback with consistency.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with production and leads around scheduling and deadlines without letting either slip.

What You Bring

  • Mid to senior level experience as a Creature FX Technical Director on feature film or high-end episodic television productions.
  • Proficiency in Maya with hands-on simulation work using nCloth and nHair in a production VFX pipeline context.
  • Familiarity with post-simulation sculpting and finaling workflows for cloth, hair, muscle, and skin.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned shots while staying integrated with a larger creature team.
  • Comfort learning new tools and software as department needs evolve across productions.

Why This Role

Framestore is a multiple Academy Award-winning studio with a consistent presence on major feature film productions, which means the creature work coming through here carries real scope and screen time. The Montreal studio gives access to that production slate with the support structure of a large, established VFX facility. For a Creature FX Technical Director looking to work on significant creature-driven features alongside experienced leads and supervisors, this is a credible next step.
