Sony Pictures Entertainment is hiring a Managing Director, China, based in Beijing to lead the full theatrical releasing operation across one of the most strategically significant film markets in the world. This role sits at the top of Sony’s China theatrical business, carrying P&L ownership across distribution, marketing, finance, and operations for the entire local release slate. It suits a senior entertainment executive with deep experience navigating the Chinese film market, managing large teams, and driving box office performance at scale.

About the Role

The Managing Director, China reports directly to the EVP, International Releasing, Asia-Pacific, and serves as the senior in-territory leader for Sony Pictures Releasing International’s theatrical business. Day to day, this means overseeing release strategy and marketing campaigns for Sony’s theatrical slate, managing government and regulatory relationships, and aligning closely with regional and Los Angeles Home Office leadership on commercial priorities. The role bridges local market execution with global theatrical distribution strategy across franchises including Spider-Man, Jumanji, and Venom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hold full P&L accountability for the China theatrical business, covering distribution, release planning, marketing spend, and revenue performance across the annual slate.
  • Develop and execute release and marketing strategies including audience targeting, media campaigns, digital and social media, publicity, and promotional partnerships for each theatrical title.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government bodies, regulatory authorities, exhibition partners, and distribution stakeholders to support successful film releases in China.
  • Monitor regulatory developments affecting market access, film regulation, intellectual property protection, and competition, and represent the company’s interests with relevant authorities.
  • Lead, develop, and manage a high-performing local organisation, building team capability through talent development and a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the China operation, Asia-Pacific regional leadership, and the Sony Pictures global headquarters on all strategic, commercial, and operational matters.

What You Bring

  • Extensive senior leadership experience in theatrical film distribution or international releasing, with direct accountability for commercial performance in the Chinese market.
  • Proven track record managing theatrical marketing campaigns and distribution strategy across a major studio or distributor slate.
  • Strong existing relationships across China’s exhibition, regulatory, and government entertainment landscape.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams across finance, marketing, and operations within a major entertainment business.
  • Fluency in Mandarin and English, with strong cultural fluency and the ability to represent a major studio publicly and diplomatically.

Why This Role

Sony Pictures Entertainment holds a significant long-term position in the China theatrical market, with an established local operation and a global slate that consistently performs at scale. This role carries genuine strategic authority, with direct input into how international theatrical distribution is shaped across the territory for years ahead. For a senior distribution executive looking to lead at the highest level in the Chinese film industry, there are few comparable positions available.
