Layout Artist

Rodeo FX is hiring a Layout Artist based in Montreal, Canada. This role sits at the intersection of previs interpretation and 3D scene construction, translating director and supervisor intent into structured, camera-ready setups within the VFX pipeline. About the Role

The Layout Artist works within Rodeo FX’s layout department, collaborating daily with environment, animation, matchmove, and supervision teams to build the foundational scene structure that downstream departments depend on. Work spans feature film and episodic television productions, where shot consistency and technical cleanliness are as important as the visual result. A typical day involves setting cameras in Maya, resolving blocking issues, attending dailies, and refining compositions based on incoming creative feedback.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret previs and supervisor directives to construct scene layouts in Maya that serve both the creative intent and the technical requirements of the 3D pipeline.
• Set up cameras with realistic focal lengths and movement that align with the director’s vision and the physical constraints of each shot.
• Identify and resolve spatial blocking conflicts or technical inconsistencies before scenes are handed off to animation and environment teams.
• Integrate real-world capture data including LiDAR and photogrammetry into scene preparation to maintain accuracy and grounding.
• Refine shot compositions and camera moves to support the pacing, readability, and visual storytelling of each sequence.
• Contribute to layout workflow documentation and share knowledge with incoming team members during onboarding.

What You Bring

• Proven experience as a Layout Artist or Previs Artist within a VFX pipeline, with credits on feature film or episodic television productions.
• Strong working knowledge of Maya, including camera setup, scene organization, and adherence to studio naming conventions.
• Familiarity with matchmove integration and the ability to work with photogrammetry or LiDAR datasets within a production context.
• A clear understanding of cinematography principles as they apply to virtual camera work and sequence structure.
• Comfort presenting work in dailies and receiving notes from supervisors and creative leads across departments.
