Lead Compositor – ILM London
- Full Time
- London, UK
Disney
ILM London, part of Disney, is hiring a Lead Compositor to join their London-based compositing team. This role sits within the compositing department and is directly responsible for the creative and technical quality of shots and sequences through the VFX pipeline, working alongside Compositing and Visual Effects Supervisors. It suits an experienced compositor who is ready to step into a leadership position on major feature film or tent-pole television productions.
About the Role
The Lead Compositor at ILM London works within one of the most respected visual effects studios in the industry, contributing to productions at the scale ILM is known for. Day to day, this means evaluating shot approaches with supervisors, managing a team of compositors across a sequence, and maintaining consistent look and colour balance from first comp through to final delivery. This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of two days on-site per week in London, with a start date of October 2026.
Key Responsibilities
- Work directly with the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to define the creative and technical approach for assigned shots and sequences.
- Assess team members’ skills and delegate shot work appropriately, while contributing to scheduling estimates with production.
- Maintain overall look, colour balance, and quality consistency across shots and sequences to ensure uniformity in final composited output.
- Identify and solve technical and aesthetic compositing problems independently, with minimal direction from senior supervisors.
- Hold accountability for team morale on your show, setting clear expectations and fostering an inclusive, community-driven working environment.
- Apply situational awareness when making decisions that affect your show, keeping broader studio and company considerations in mind.
What You Bring
- Strong, demonstrable proficiency in Nuke, the industry-standard compositing application used across feature film and episodic VFX pipelines.
- Familiarity with Linux systems as part of a professional post-production workflow.
- Previous experience in look development and sequence supervision within a VFX studio environment.
- The ability to write Nuke gizmos or plugins is a meaningful advantage for this role.
- A demo reel, shot breakdown, or equivalent work sample is required as part of your application.
Why This Role
ILM has shaped the visual language of blockbuster filmmaking for decades, and the London studio is an active contributor to that legacy across major Disney and third-party productions. For a compositor ready to lead, this role offers genuine sequence ownership on productions with significant scope and visibility. The studio’s scale also means real access to pipeline resources, experienced supervisors, and a peer group working at the top of the VFX industry.
