Senior Compositor

ILM Sydney is hiring a Senior Compositor to join their compositing department in Sydney, Australia. This role sits within the VFX pipeline on feature film production, responsible for combining live action plates with CG elements to deliver polished, supervisor-approved shots. It’s a position that suits an experienced compositor who knows their way around a complex shot build and is ready to take ownership of sequences from brief through to final delivery.

About the Role

You’ll be working within ILM’s Sydney compositing department, contributing to feature film projects that sit alongside some of the highest-profile titles in the industry. Day to day, you’re evaluating shot approaches with the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor, building and refining shots, and attending dailies to stay aligned with the overall sequence look. The work covers 2D tracking, matte extraction, colour grading, and element layering, with an emphasis on maintaining consistency across shots and sequences.

Key Responsibilities

• Work directly with the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to assess and plan your approach on assigned shots before committing to a build.
• Deliver completed shots that hold up across colour balance, overall look, and quality benchmarks set for each sequence.
• Attend dailies regularly and engage actively in the creative problem-solving process as shots move through the post-production workflow.
• Provide feedback to other team members and contribute to collective aesthetic decisions on sequences as they develop.
• Mentor Apprentice and Junior Artists, helping them work through their shots and develop their craft within the VFX pipeline.
• Manage your own shot workload to hit defined production milestones without needing close supervision.

What You Bring

• At least three years of compositing experience on feature film production, with a showreel that demonstrates the range and quality of your work.
• Fluency in Nuke, the primary compositing tool used across ILM’s feature film pipeline.
• Strong foundational skills in photography, photographic lighting, colour, and composition.
• Ability to write Nuke gizmos is a genuine plus, as is experience with Python or C++.
• A degree in Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Design, or Photography is useful but not a requirement if your reel speaks for itself.
