Layout Artist

Rodeo FX is hiring a Layout Artist at their Montreal studio to join their VFX pipeline team. This role sits at the foundation of the 3D production pipeline, responsible for translating previs and supervisor directives into structured, camera-ready Maya scenes that animation, environment, and compositing teams build from. It suits a technically grounded 3D artist who understands both the craft of cinematography and the organizational demands of a professional VFX pipeline.

About the Role

The Layout Artist works within the layout department at Rodeo FX, contributing to feature film and episodic television productions across the full shot lifecycle. Day to day, that means ingesting previs references, establishing camera setups, and delivering clean, well-organized Maya scenes that meet both creative and technical standards before shots move downstream. You will coordinate regularly with matchmove, animation, and environment teams to ensure elements integrate without friction.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret previs and supervisor notes to build scene structure and shot layout directly in Maya, working to directing intentions and shot-specific constraints.
• Design and place cameras with attention to realistic optics, composition, and the emotional rhythm of the sequence.
• Identify and resolve blocking issues or technical inconsistencies before shots advance further into the 3D pipeline.
• Incorporate real-world capture data including LiDAR and photogrammetry scans when preparing and grounding scenes.
• Present work in dailies and interdepartmental reviews, communicate clearly with leads about delays or blockers, and share shot-relevant information across departments.
• Contribute to workflow documentation and stay current with developments in virtual production and studio tooling.

What You Bring

• Solid working knowledge of Maya, with demonstrated experience in scene organization and camera setup within a VFX pipeline environment.
• Previous credits on feature film or episodic television productions in a layout, previs, or related 3D role.
• Familiarity with matchmove outputs, photogrammetry data, and how environment assets are structured for downstream use.
• A clear understanding of cinematic composition, lens behavior, and how camera movement supports visual storytelling.
• Experience following studio naming conventions and technical delivery standards in a structured production context.
