Job Type
DNEG Animation is hiring a Pipeline Assistant Technical Director for their Montréal, Quebec studio in a hybrid remote capacity. This role sits within the pipeline department and is responsible for keeping the tools, software, and workflows running smoothly across feature film animation productions. It is a strong fit for a TD who splits their time comfortably between hands-on artist support and active tool development in Python.
About the Role
The Pipeline Assistant Technical Director at DNEG works embedded within the animation pipeline team, supporting productions that range from graphic novel adaptations to stylized original features released for international audiences. Day to day, this person is fielding support tickets from artists, writing and refining Python tools for DCC applications, and contributing to sprint cycles alongside senior pipeline staff. The role reports through pipeline supervisors and the pipeline architect, with real input into scoping and delivering development projects against a production roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct technical support and troubleshooting to artists across multiple concurrent feature animation productions, triaging and resolving pipeline support requests or escalating as needed.
- Develop, test, and maintain Python-based tools for DCC suites including Maya, Houdini, Katana, and Nuke to meet project-specific production requirements.
- Participate in agile development sprints, including sprint demos, to present pipeline tool progress to colleagues and production stakeholders.
- Write clear technical documentation to support the adoption of new tools and manage change across the artist team.
- Mentor and support junior assistant TDs in handling support requests and building their understanding of the VFX pipeline.
- Assist pipeline supervisors with project setup and the management of project configurations at the start of new productions.
What You Bring
- Prior experience at a feature film animation or visual effects studio, or in a closely related production environment.
- Strong Python scripting skills and working proficiency with Linux in a production pipeline context.
- Solid understanding of animation and VFX production workflows, including how assets move through a multi-department pipeline.
- Hands-on tool development experience within one or more DCC applications such as Maya, Houdini, Katana, or Nuke.
- Clear communication skills across both technical developers and non-technical artists, a requirement in any shared pipeline support role.
- A degree in computer science, computer graphics, or a related field is an asset, as is experience with version control and pipeline architecture concepts.
Why This Role
DNEG Animation has built a reputation for high-end feature animation with an emphasis on craft, and this Pipeline Assistant Technical Director position puts you inside the infrastructure that makes that work possible. The Montréal studio is actively staffing up for a slate of new productions, which means real opportunity to shape pipeline decisions early rather than inheriting a locked system. For a TD looking to grow toward pipeline supervision or architecture, the mentorship structure and sprint-based development process here offer a clear path.
Apply now for the Pipeline Assistant Technical Director role at DNEG Animation and bring your pipeline development skills to a feature animation studio with a serious production slate.
