About the Role

The Associate Technical Supervisor works directly under the Technical Supervisor, partnering with Solutions Engineering and creative leadership to keep the animation pipeline running across departments ranging from modeling and rigging through to lighting, compositing, and final output. Day-to-day, this means triaging technical issues on the floor, validating new tools before they hit artist workstations, and coordinating with TDs to move high-priority fixes through the VFX pipeline without disrupting production schedules. Netflix Animation Studios operates across three global locations, and this Sydney-based role contributes to a shared studio-wide pipeline serving feature film production.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee technical direction and hands-on support for one or more stages of the animation pipeline, ensuring tools and workflows meet both creative and studio technical standards.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production pipeline issues in partnership with the Technical Supervisor and Solutions Engineering, escalating where necessary to keep artists unblocked.
• Test and validate new tools and pipeline changes before deployment, tracking issues and coordinating cross-departmental testing to maintain production workflow integrity.
• Break down technical projects into scheduled workstreams, manage fortnightly TD allocation, and communicate progress clearly to Program Managers and production leadership.
• Mentor TDs through onboarding and day-to-day technical guidance, supporting their development in collaboration with Technology Talent Management.
• Contribute to estimates, pitches, and planning for show-specific technical work alongside the Technical Supervisor and Solutions Engineering Manager.

What You Bring

• Solid background as a TD or technical lead on animated feature film production, with credits across at least one full production cycle.
• Hands-on experience with animation pipeline tools covering areas such as rigging, surfacing, layout, lighting, rendering, or compositing depending on specialisation.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex pipeline and workflow issues under production pressure, with experience coordinating fixes across multiple departments.
• Experience mentoring or leading small technical teams, with a practical understanding of scheduling and resource allocation in a studio environment.
• Familiarity with studio-wide pipeline architecture and how show-level technical decisions integrate with broader animation studio infrastructure.
