Job Position(s): A Midsummer Night's Dream
Project Type: Film & Television
Job Date: Per Project

Vancouver Actors Guide is casting multiple roles for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a stage production shooting in Vancouver, BC. Performers will work across the two core acting companies in the play, the Lovers and the Mechanicals, with the Mechanicals doubling into the fairy court. This is a volunteer production suited to actors looking to build classical theatre credits and sharpen their Shakespeare on camera or on stage.

About the Role

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is being developed through Vancouver Actors Guide, a long-standing free resource for the Vancouver acting community. The production covers both comedic and dramatic registers across a full classical text, with roles ranging from lead lovers to character-heavy ensemble parts. Actors cast in the Mechanicals should expect doubling requirements as those roles cross into the fairy court scenes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a principal or supporting role within one of the two acting companies, the Lovers or the Mechanicals, across the full run of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
  • Deliver Shakespearean verse with textual accuracy, whether performing Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, Helena, or one of the Mechanical characters such as Quince, Flute, Snout, or Starveling.
  • Manage doubling responsibilities if cast in the Mechanicals, which requires tracking separate character work for both the troupe scenes and the fairy court.
  • Attend rehearsals and be prepared to work on-book or off-book depending on the production schedule set by the director.
  • Collaborate with the creative team on character development specific to your assigned role, including physical and vocal choices appropriate to classical theatre performance.

What You Bring

  • Demonstrable experience performing classical or Shakespearean text, either in theatre production, training, or on-camera work.
  • Ability to submit a 30 to 60 second self-taped audition reading Shakespearean text, on-book or off-book.
  • A current headshot and acting resume reflecting your performance credits to date.
  • Clear knowledge of which role or roles you are targeting within the Lovers or Mechanicals groupings.
  • Comfort with doubling if pursuing a Mechanicals role, given the fairy court crossover in the script.

Why This Role

Vancouver Actors Guide has operated as a free community resource for local performers for years, and productions attached to the network offer real credits within a supportive Vancouver theatre environment. This is an unpaid volunteer production, which makes it well suited to actors in training or those building a classical theatre portfolio alongside screen work. A Midsummer Night’s Dream offers a full classical text with strong individual role definition, not a background or ensemble walk-on.
