Technical Director Performance

Netflix is hiring a Technical Director Performance based in Sydney, Australia to join its animation studio pipeline team. About the Role

The Technical Director Performance works inside Netflix’s animation production pipeline, embedded with layout and animation departments to ensure tools and workflows meet the creative and technical demands of feature film production. Day to day, that means debugging Maya-based workflows, developing and maintaining Python tools, coordinating with Solutions Engineering and R&D, and helping artists across global studio productions stay unblocked. This is a hands-on technical role with real ownership over pipeline decisions, not just ticket resolution.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, write, and maintain high-quality Python tools that support animation and layout workflows within the feature film production pipeline.
• Debug and resolve workflow issues in Maya and related software, working alongside Lead TDs, Technical Supervisors, and Solutions Engineers to close problems at the source.
• Participate in QA, technical testing, and validation of new tool releases and pipeline changes to ensure artist workflow remains intact through each update.
• Contribute to the design and evolution of the canonical production pipeline, including USD integration and data flow architecture across adjoining departments.
• Provide technical guidance to other TDs and Technical Artists on day-to-day issues, escalating through appropriate channels when problems exceed immediate scope.
• Monitor development initiative timelines, break down technical projects into organised components, and flag scope changes that require revised estimates.

What You Bring

• Five or more years of pipeline TD experience on animated features, animated series, VFX feature films, or in a game studio production environment.
• Proficiency in Python and PyQt or a comparable GUI toolkit, with the ability to code review and ship maintainable, production-quality work.
• Hands-on experience troubleshooting Maya and familiarity with USD concepts as they apply to animation production pipelines.
• Working knowledge of Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid) and code management tools including Git and GitHub.
• Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences, particularly when explaining pipeline or tool behaviour to artists with varying technical backgrounds.
