FX Artist – Mid and Senior – Multiple Positions

Job Position(s): FX Artist - Mid and Senior - Multiple Positions

Rodeo FX is hiring for multiple FX Artist positions at the mid and senior level, based across their studios in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada. These roles sit inside the 3D pipeline, where FX Artists own the full lifecycle of visual simulations, from early setup through final rendered output, working alongside CG supervision and other production departments to deliver photorealistic effects for feature film and episodic television projects. This is a role for Houdini-fluent effects artists who can work with real autonomy and translate a director’s visual intent into technically sound, production-ready shots.

About the Role

The FX department at Rodeo FX operates at the intersection of technical simulation and creative problem-solving, contributing to VFX pipeline work across high-end film and television productions. Day to day, FX Artists are in the thick of it, building and iterating on complex simulations, attending dailies, integrating notes, and coordinating with lighting, layout, and compositing to make sure effects land correctly across departments. The studio runs multiple projects simultaneously, so artists move between briefs and are expected to manage their own task load with minimal hand-holding.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce complex simulations including fire, smoke, explosions, fluid, destruction, and abstract or magical effects, built to both artistic and technical spec.
• Work in Houdini across Pyro, FLIP, RBD, Vellum, and SOPs to generate optimized, cache-efficient effects that hold up through the post-production workflow.
• Manage assigned FX tasks from initial setup through final render submission, including rigorous QC of workfiles and caches before handoff.
• Attend dailies, absorb feedback constructively, and adapt simulations to match the visual style, pacing, and narrative needs of each scene.
• Identify technical issues early and communicate blockers or schedule risks to production leads before they become problems.
• Share techniques and tools with colleagues in the FX department, and contribute to documenting or refining departmental workflows as needed.

What You Bring

• Mid-level or senior experience as an FX Artist in a professional VFX studio environment, with credits on feature film or high-end episodic television production.
• Strong working knowledge of Houdini, specifically Pyro, FLIP, RBD, Vellum, and SOP-level workflows.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently through a full FX shot, from brief to final cache delivery.
• Familiarity with how FX assets interact with layout, lighting, and compositing within a structured VFX pipeline.
• Clear, professional communication habits with leads, production coordinators, and artists across disciplines.
