This position sits within the animation department and is responsible for delivering hyper-realistic creature, character, and object performances directly into the VFX pipeline for film and television production. It suits a working animator with a strong eye for physical performance who is comfortable adapting across both realistic and stylized animation contexts.

About the Role

Animation Artists at Rodeo FX work under the Animation Lead and Supervisor, contributing shot-level work across feature film and episodic television projects that demand high-end creature and character animation. Day to day, that means interpreting creative briefs, building polished performances from blocking through final, and delivering clean, export-ready animation that downstream departments can actually use. Production tempo is real, dailies are frequent, and the expectation is that you can present your work clearly and integrate notes efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver shot animation that meets both the creative intent and the technical specifications of the VFX pipeline, from blocking through final polish.
• Apply core animation principles including timing, weight, arcs, and posing across a range of performance styles, from photoreal creatures to mechanical objects.
• Interpret reference materials and creative direction to build nuanced, expressive performances that serve the shot’s storytelling function.
• Identify and troubleshoot rigging or scene-level technical issues in coordination with the rigging and technical animation teams before they become downstream problems.
• Maintain file naming conventions, scene organization, and pipeline standards to keep handoffs clean for adjacent departments.
• Participate actively in dailies and shot reviews, presenting work in progress and responding to notes with clear, actionable revisions.

What You Bring

• A professional animation credit history in feature film production, episodic television, or high-end VFX work at a recognized animation studio or VFX house.
• Demonstrated command of Maya, with experience animating creatures, characters, or complex mechanical assets in a production environment.
• Solid understanding of physical performance, weight, and secondary motion as applied to hyper-realistic animation work.
• Ability to read and respond to technical rigs without breaking scene structure or creating issues for downstream departments.
• A reel that shows range across at least two performance styles, whether creature, character, or object animation.
