This role sits at the head of the storyboard department on an original anime-inspired production, responsible for translating a web comic source into cinematic storyboards and animatics that will drive a proof-of-concept trailer and lay the groundwork for a full animated series. It suits an experienced storyboard artist who has already moved into a directing or supervising capacity and is comfortable owning the visual storytelling language of a project from the ground up.

About the Role

The 2D Storyboard Director leads the storyboard team through the complete arc of an animation production pipeline, from initial script breakdowns through final animatic delivery. Day to day, this means boarding sequences, reviewing other artists’ work, and maintaining shot continuity and cinematic consistency across a project still being actively developed. The role works directly alongside the Animation Director and Producer, making it a creative leadership position as much as a hands-on storyboarding one.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the storyboard team across all phases of production, from concept through animatic completion on a proof-of-concept trailer and series development materials.
• Translate scripts and source panels from the web comic into storyboards that serve pacing, character performance, and action with clear cinematic intent.
• Define and document the project’s visual language, including staging, composition, camera movement, and shot continuity standards that can scale into episodic production.
• Review storyboards and animatics from the team and deliver specific, actionable creative notes that maintain consistency across the animation production pipeline.
• Establish storyboard workflows and visual standards in Storyboard Pro appropriate to an anime-inspired storytelling style, including the pacing and cinematography conventions of the genre.
• Partner with creative leadership to balance the ambitions of the project against production schedules and identify risks before they become delays.

What You Bring

• Significant storyboard credits on animated productions, with direct experience directing or leading a storyboard team on episodic animation or an animated series.
• Fluency in Storyboard Pro or comparable storyboarding software used in professional animation studio production.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt comics or graphic novels into animated sequences while preserving the source material’s intent and energy.
• A working understanding of anime genre conventions, including how pacing, shot composition, and visual language differ from Western animation traditions.
• Strong communication skills and experience mentoring artists with varying levels of storyboard experience.
