Project Type: Feature Film
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Rodeo FX is collecting expressions of interest for a Junior Artiste Groom (Blender) based in Montreal, Canada, ahead of anticipated openings on a confidential production. This role sits within the Character department, where the focus is on building hair and fur descriptions for animated characters, creatures, and props using Blender and the studio’s internal VFX pipeline. It suits a junior grooming artist who is comfortable working from concept art and creative direction to deliver technically clean assets on a production schedule.

About the Role

The Junior Artiste Groom works under the Groom Supervisor and Character Supervisor, contributing to the grooming of characters and assets in alignment with the artistic vision set for the project. Day to day, this means grooming, calibrating, and in some cases shading hair and fur on a range of assets, from hero characters to secondary props, within a structured VFX pipeline. Collaboration with Modeling, Rigging, and Surfacing teams is a regular part of the workflow, not an occasional one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create hair and fur grooming for animated characters, creatures, and props, working directly from approved concept art and production design references.
  • Ensure all asset deliveries meet the technical requirements of the production pipeline and conform to established internal workflow standards.
  • Participate in the development and refinement of grooming tools used within the department.
  • Execute revisions requested by the Groom Supervisor and Director within allocated production quotas and deadlines set by production coordinators.
  • Coordinate with Modeling, Rigging, and Surfacing departments to meet each team’s technical asset requirements.
  • Organize personal workload and prepare work-in-progress presentations for review by the Supervisor and client.

What You Bring

  • Hands-on experience with Blender for grooming and hair simulation in an animation studio or VFX production context.
  • Foundational understanding of hair and fur shading pipelines and how grooming assets interact with downstream departments.
  • Exposure to production workflow environments, including asset versioning and delivery protocols.
  • Ability to interpret concept art and translate creative direction into technically sound groom descriptions.
  • Strong communication habits and the ability to flag problems and seek information proactively within a team structure.

Why This Role

Rodeo FX is a Montreal-based VFX studio with credits across major feature film and episodic television productions, offering junior artists genuine exposure to high-level production pipelines from early in their careers. This is a speculative application ahead of confirmed openings, which means candidates who apply now are positioning themselves at the front of consideration when the role formally opens.
