Job Type
Disney is hiring a Location Designer for Disney Television Animation, based on-site in Glendale, CA. This role sits within the art department, producing scene set designs, floor plans, and orthographic drawings that give episodic animation its visual architecture. It’s a strong fit for a production artist with a background in set design or architectural illustration who can work to a show’s established style and keep pace with a broadcast schedule.
About the Role
Disney Television Animation has been producing kids and family content for over 40 years, working across traditional 2D, rig-based 2D, CG preschool, CG premium, and stop-motion formats. The Location Designer reports to the Art Director or Location Design Lead and works episode by episode, translating storyboard panels into buildable, production-ready environments. Day-to-day work involves roughing out background designs, incorporating notes from supervising artists, and delivering clean finals that meet both the visual style of the show and the line producer’s schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Review storyboard panels to identify required backgrounds and produce rough location designs for each episode.
- Present designs to the Art Director or Location Design Lead and revise artwork based on their notes before locking finals.
- Deliver clean, approved location designs that conform to the established visual style and sensibility of the production.
- Construct orthographic drawings with multiple angles and floor plans to communicate three-dimensional space clearly to the animation team.
- Resolve design problems with supervisors in a way that keeps the production pipeline moving without compromising visual integrity.
- Track deliverables against the schedule provided by the Line Producer to support cost-effective, on-time production.
What You Bring
- A portfolio demonstrating knowledge of architecture, set design, perspective, and the spatial relationships between foreground, middle ground, and background.
- Proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator, with familiarity with 3D software where applicable to the production.
- The ability to work within and adapt to the specific visual style of an assigned show across animation production formats.
- Strong organizational and communication skills suited to a structured, schedule-driven episodic television environment.
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional work experience in animation or production design.
