Job Position(s): Artiste VFX Avance.e / Advanced VFX Artist
Project Type: Video Game
Job Date: Full Time
Compensation: Paid - Salary

Warner Bros. Games Montreal is hiring an Advanced VFX Artist to join their AAA game development studio in Montreal, Quebec. This role sits within the VFX department and is responsible for designing and building real-time visual effects across the full scope of a AAA title, from gameplay moments to cinematic sequences, working directly within the Unreal 5 pipeline. It suits a senior-level VFX artist with at least two shipped AAA credits who is comfortable owning both the craft and the VFX pipeline development side of production.

About the Role

The Advanced VFX Artist works embedded with feature teams, translating art direction into real-time effects that hold up under hardware constraints without sacrificing visual quality. Day-to-day work spans effect creation in Niagara, shader development, cross-team prioritization, and improving the VFX pipeline alongside technical counterparts. The studio has been building AAA titles under Warner Bros. IP, including DC Entertainment properties, since 2010 and the team now exceeds 300 people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and create real-time visual effects across the full game scope, working in close coordination with art direction to maintain a consistent visual language throughout production.
  • Develop and document creative direction for VFX technique and style, giving the broader team a clear reference point for quality and consistency.
  • Evaluate and prioritize VFX requests from multiple feature teams, balancing production timelines against creative and technical requirements.
  • Work with the technical team to identify bottlenecks and improve the VFX pipeline, using available tools including Houdini and EmberGen where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain shader knowledge to push the limits of real-time rendering within defined hardware budgets.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level VFX artists, sharing techniques and raising the overall quality bar across the discipline.

What You Bring

  • A minimum of 8 years of VFX experience in game production, with credits on more than one shipped AAA title.
  • A portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates real-time VFX work at a senior level.
  • Proficiency in Maya and Photoshop, with working knowledge of Houdini and EmberGen considered a strong asset.
  • Deep familiarity with Unreal Engine 5 and the Niagara particle system, which is highly preferred for this position.
  • Solid understanding of shader technology and hardware performance constraints in a game VFX pipeline context.
  • Prior mentorship or lead experience is considered an asset.

Why This Role

Warner Bros. Games Montreal works with some of the most recognized IP in entertainment, giving VFX artists direct access to high-profile AAA projects with the resources and scope to do serious work. The studio has a track record of growing its team steadily and investing in pipeline development rather than treating it as an afterthought. For a senior VFX artist looking to shape both the craft and the process on a major title, this is a substantive step.

Apply now for the Advanced VFX Artist position at Warner Bros. Games Montreal and bring your real-time VFX work to one of the industry’s most recognized AAA studios.
