About the Role

The Pipeline Assistant Technical Director works alongside senior TDs and pipeline engineers inside DNEG’s animation studio, contributing to the tooling infrastructure that underpins shot production across animated feature projects. A typical day involves writing and debugging pipeline scripts, supporting artists with technical issues rooted in the pipeline, and helping implement new tools as production demands evolve. The role sits at the intersection of software development and production workflow, meaning the ATD needs to communicate clearly with both engineers and production teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing and maintaining pipeline scripts and tools that support animation production workflows across departments including rigging, lighting, and compositing.
• Troubleshooting pipeline and software issues raised by artists during active production, diagnosing root causes and delivering timely fixes that keep shots on schedule.
• Supporting the integration of third-party software and proprietary tools into the existing VFX pipeline architecture.
• Documenting pipeline systems and tool updates clearly so that both technical and non-technical production staff can reference them accurately.
• Working with senior Pipeline TDs to test new pipeline features before they are rolled out to the wider animation studio.
• Contributing to pipeline reviews and technical discussions, flagging potential workflow bottlenecks before they affect the production schedule.

What You Bring

• Demonstrable experience in a pipeline, technical directing, or software support role within an animation studio or VFX facility.
• Proficiency in Python scripting, with experience writing production tools in a studio environment.
• Familiarity with animation and VFX software commonly used in feature film production, such as Maya, Houdini, or Nuke.
• Understanding of asset management systems and shot-based production pipelines.
• Strong communication skills when working across technical and creative departments on live productions.
